Phyllis M. Karbo, 91, of Sioux Falls, SD passed away Sunday, February 24, 2019 at the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls. Phyllis is the Grandmother of Funeral Director, Mike Karbo in Burke, SD.
Her funeral service will be 11:00 AM Saturday, March 2 at Peace Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, with burial at Russell Cemetery, Russell, MN. The family will greet friends at the church for one hour prior to the service.
Phyllis Marie Smedsrud, daughter of Melvin and Ethel (Palmer) Smedsrud, was born August 27, 1927 in Coon Creek Township near Russell, MN. She was baptized and confirmed at Opdahl Lutheran Church in Florence, MN. Phyllis attended country school and Lynd Public School.
Phyllis was united in marriage with Robert W. Karbo on March 5, 1947 in Tyler, MN. The couple farmed near Russell and were blessed with six children. Phyllis was employed by Marshall Foods and Schwan’s Dairy for a number of years. Following her retirement in 1985, she moved to Sioux Falls, SD where she resided until her death.
Phyllis’ greatest joys were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her hobbies included playing the accordion and piano and singing with the family. Phyllis loved watching the Minnesota Twins, playing cards and reading. She also loved to cook and was known for her potato salad and “the cake”.
Grateful for having shared her life are her five children, Larry Karbo and his wife, Gail, Sioux Falls, SD, Roberta Karbo, Sioux Falls, SD, David Karbo and his wife, Rhonda, Russell, MN, Sandi Nelson and her husband, Neal, Barrett, MN, Dan Karbo and his wife, Linda, Sioux Falls, SD; her son-in-law, Craig Skuya, Sioux Falls, SD; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Arlene Smedsrud, Sioux Falls, SD, Lorraine Smedsrud, Fargo, ND; numerous nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, on May 18, 1979; a daughter, Vicki Skuya and an infant daughter; her parents, Melvin and Ethel Smedsrud; and eight siblings, Warren Smedsrud, Muriel Peterson, Wally Smedsrud, Nile Smedsrud, Stanley Smedsrud, Donis Lee, Janet Berg and Deanna Buchert.
