Lucille Hettinger

November 25, 1926 ~ April 15, 2019 (age 92)


Lucille Hettinger, 92, Mitchell, died Monday, April 15, 2019 at Avera Brady Health and Rehab.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Monday, April 22 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm Sunday with a scripture service and rosary at 7:00 at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.

Lucille Magdalene Hettinger was born November 25, 1926 at home in White Lake to Bernard and Malinda (Mairose) Gales. She grew up attending St. Peter’s Catholic School through the sixth grade and then attended White Public School and graduated from high school. During high school she worked at the White Lake Telephone Office and Post Office. On October 12, 1950 she married Marvin Hettinger. In 1952 they moved to the family farm south of White Lake where they farmed until moving to Mitchell in 1984. Lucille enjoyed growing many indoor plants and doing volunteer work at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital and the Thrift Store. She and Marvin were involved in several dance clubs and enjoyed traveling to dances with their many friends. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church where she led the Altar Society Funeral Committee for many years, the Moose Lodge, the American Legion and VFW Auxiliary.

She is survived by nine children: David (Joan) Hettinger of Mitchell, Joan (Ralph) Schoenfelder of Sioux Falls, Mike (Marlene) Hettinger of Mitchell, Susan (Harlan) Spaans of Corsica, Paul (Janice) Hettinger of White Lake, Diane Hettinger of Mount Vernon, OR, Dale Hettinger of Goodyear, AZ, Mark (Kathy) Hettinger of Mitchell and Carla (Dana) Jensen of Mitchell, 20 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchildren, two brothers: Gene (Barb) Gales of Gillette, WY and Larry (Linda) Gales of White Lake.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, three sons: Philip, Robert and Daniel, grandson, Steve Schoenfelder, brother, Marvin and his wife Margaret “Blonde” Gales.
