Kent E. Morstad, son of Grant and Cleo (Conklin) Morstad, was born April 4, 1936 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Kent attended Mark Twain Elementary and Washington High School before graduating from Augustana College (now Augustana University) in 1958. During high school and college, he worked at The Barrel drive-in, Weatherwax’s Menswear and John Morrell. After graduation from the University of Minnesota School of Mortuary Science, Kent worked as a Funeral Director in Watertown, South Dakota, Kalamazoo, Michigan and Worthington, Minnesota before returning to Sioux Falls and joining Miller Funeral Home in 1968.  Kent became a partner in 1972, and retired in 2006 after thirty-eight years with the firm.

Kent had a strong commitment to professional and civic engagement. He served as an officer or Board member of the South Dakota Funeral Directors Association, the National Funeral Directors Association, and the International Order of the Golden Rule (a professional and trade organization for funeral directors).

Locally, Kent served as an officer and/or on the Board of Directors of the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce, the Sioux Empire Fair, the Sioux Falls Family YMCA, the JayCees, the Sioux Falls Community Concerts Association, Main Street Sioux Falls, the Augustana College Alumni Council, the South Dakota Lions Eye Bank, Crime Stoppers of Sioux Falls, the City of Sioux Falls Public Parking Facilities, the City of Sioux Falls Subsidy Review Board, the local chapter of Sales and Marketing Executives, and the Sioux Valley Hospital Planned Giving Board. He was twice Potentate of the El Riad Shrine (1982 & 1995), was president of the Midwest Shrine Association (2002) and most recently sat on the Board of Governors of the Shrine Hospitals for Children (Twin Cities Unit). He was active as a Jester, Sioux Falls Court #114 for thirty-three years.

Kent and his wife Judy also supported various charitable organizations, including the Sioux Falls Community Foundation and Augustana University. Morstad Field (established in 2012 as the home of the Augustana University’s Women’s Soccer Team) is considered their most significant and enduring gift.

A longtime member of Westward Ho Country Club (now the Country Club of Sioux Falls), Kent was an aspiring golfer; he was also a dedicated hunter and conservationist. He was a licensed pilot from 1973 – 2006, and he was also an experienced downhill skier having earned NASTAR bronze, silver and gold medals in competition. He and Judy enjoyed traveling and visited many friends and family across America.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Judy, and his children, Jill Morstad (Andy Miller) of Lincoln, Nebraska; Nina (Rob) Ulrich, Sioux Falls; Paul (Lisa) Morstad of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Bret Morstad of Arvada, Colorado and Kari Morstad, Sioux Falls. Grandpa Kent cherished, and was cherished in return by six grandchildren: Summer and Spencer Ulrich, Maren Miller, Lauren Morstad, Lena Morstad and Kendall Morstad.
